Gary “Gazza” Sands after a few years in Emerald is leaving 4HI and going to 4ZR in Roma to do the brekky shift on transfer with the Smart Radio group. Steve Curtis will take over the brekky show at 4HI. Gazza’s last shift will be on the 12th and he commences in Roma on the 22nd September.

Tony Veitch, former TVNZ and Radio SPORT broadcaster,  is reportedly being closely monitored by family members amid concerns for his health and safety.  The 34-year-old, who is accused of assaulting his former partner, was rushed to Auckland Hospital on Friday after apparently disappearing from his Auckland home and being found in a remote area of Northland following a frantic search a few hours later. A nation-wide hunt for Australia’s best unsigned musical acts for commercial radio is underway with the announcement of nine finalists. More details.

CROW FM Wondai breakfast host Wayne 'Kratzie' Kratzmann, sports commentator Skip & friend Noodles will walk 230 km across the South Burnett in South East Queensland commencing Monday morning.  The trip will take the boys 6 days and will end at the Kingaroy show grounds. The Crow FM Crew put on a radiothon on Friday September 5 to help support Kratzie and the team. By 10 am a total of $12,500 was raised and will go to 'Relay for Life' which is aiding the Queensland Cancer Council.

Melbourne's Magic 1278 has more listeners than MIX and Vega. It rates just a couple of points behind Gold, Nova and Triple M. Yet many have never heard of Magic, the often-overlooked AM oldies music station. Full story.

An ABC Classic FM live broadcast of a concert by tenor Steve Davislim and students of the Australian National Academy of Music was cancelled last night after the threat of legal action against the singer. Full story.

Nova 106.9 Brisbane has appointed two new APD’s!  Kate Casey will step up to be Nova 106.9’s MD and Assistant Program Director.  PD Ryan Rathbone says: "We’d like to recognize all the amazing work Kate has done for Nova 106.9 in her three and a bit years here and we can see the potential for her to grow into a bigger programming role within the station, It is the next logical step in Kate’s career while not taking her away from her passion of music."   Tim Lordan also joins NOVA as APD.  He is currently the Music Director/Assistant Program Director at SEA FM on the Gold Coast.  He has been with that company for the past 9 years during that time he had held PD and MD positions within the network.

Iris Williams, a 72-year-old former teacher, died shortly after leaving the Sunshine Coast Rhema Radio annual general meeting when she was involved in a two vehicle crash.   Rhema Radio manager Des Morris said the station staff and volunteers had been devastated by the news. Full story.

Chris Holland formally Hot 100 Darwin Music Director has been promoted to Assistant Program Director of Hot 100 and Mix 1049. Hot 100 also welcomes Joel Gelding to breakfast and Hot 100 music director.

3AW drive announcer Derryn Hinch says he will not drink again because decades of alcohol abuse nearly cost him his life. Full story.

Steve Ahern, Director of radio division of the Australian Film Television & Radio School, is the author of a new novel about a teenage community radio announcer who gets caught up in a plot to kill a member of the British royal family in Harbour Terror.  Steve is also the author of the popular radio text book, Making Radio. SMH reports: "To casual observers, Wil Anderson is having an impressive year. Punching above the station average on the Triple M drive show with comedy partner Anthony Lehmann, hosting this year's hit television show, The Gruen Transfer and keeping busy on the stand-up circuit. Full story.

Dean Clairs, Nat Foster & Shane McFarlane from The Big Couch have celebrated 600 shows together on air in the drive slot on Mix 94.5 in Perth.

A property owned by 6PR Perth drive broadcaster Howard Sattler has been reduced by almost $1 million after a 10-month stint for sale. Full story.

ABC Radio Far North announcer Pat Morrish has walked away from the microphone, putting an end to a 26-year career in radio. More details.

Fairfax has sacked Sydney Morning Herald contributor Mike Carlton after he refused to write his weekly column during a staff strike. Full story.  More details.

'Robbie' is leaving the Star FM Gippsland breakfast show to pursue a career in acting.  His co-partner 'Pinky' is now looking for a new co-host for a new brekky show.  (Do you fit the bill?  See 'Radio Jobs'.)

The Melbourne Radio School has relocated to new state-of-the-art facilities at 22 Albert Rd South Melbourne.  More details.

David Bunt, Chairman of 2CCR FM 90.5 has retired from the chairman's position after 2 years serving that role. He is now a consultant for the station. Chris Cunliffe-Jones has replaced him as chairman. A new board of directors has also been elected.

96.5 Brisbane Operations Manager Malcolm Pollard is leaving the station in September.

Former radio manager Barry Augustus passed away on Tuesday the 26th August aged 76. (We welcome your tributes.  Please email to editor and we'll publish in new JJ.)

Brett “Nozz” Nossiter has been appointed Digital Product Manager at dmg.

Michele Bawden is the new General Manager of the CBAA.   She replaces Barry Melville.

2BS Bathurst radio personality Janeen Hosemans has been ordered to work 150 hours unpaid for the community as an alternative to a nine-month gaol sentence following her conviction for social security fraud. Full story.

101 FM Logan has elected David Jull as their station President for the next 2 years.

ABC Insiders host Barrie Cassidy has stepped in to host the broadcaster's new breakfast show, replacing journalist Peter Lloyd, who is facing a trial in Singapore on drug-related charges. Full story.

Former radio manager Barry Augustus passed away in Pindara Hospital on the Gold Coast on Tuesday the 26th August aged 76, a day before his 77th birthday.  Barry was employed by Perc Campbell at 2GB as office boy and rose to become sound effects operator and audio producer of all Jack Davey and Bob Dyer shows from the old 2GB building in Phillip Street.  After the ill-fated 87-2GB launch of 1976 Barry became Manager of 2GB and saw out his days in radio as the manager of Beautiful Music 4BH in Brisbane which at the time rated No 1.  (We welcome your tributes.  Please email to editor and we'll publish in new JJ.)

Steve Olech, General Manager – Commercial Operations of AFL club Port Adelaide,  has accepted a new role as Group Commercial Manager at DMG Radio. More details.

Some changes afoot at Christian station, Vision Radio Network. Shelley (Michelle Poulsen) moves from drive to join Robbo (Andrew Robinson) for breakfast in a new duo starting September 29. Matt Gees from ABC Bundaberg also joins the team in late September to take on drive.

Dave 'Stetto' Stretton is the new brekky show host at 2ST in Nowra - less than an hour south of Wollongong , where he was previously with i98FM for the last nine years.  Dave also keeps busy covering weekend shifts for WAVE FM in Wollongong.

MIX 94.5 Perth gave around 45 people a chance to audition for a chance to sing on stage with Stevie Wonder when he’s in Perth October 14. More details .
